Submissions

Web Edition

The web edition of the International Affairs Review publishes on a continuous basis, and submissions are considered on a rolling basis. Accepted formats include analyses, op-eds, book reviews, and research articles.

Pieces must:

·         Be written by a current graduate student or a recent graduate of a graduate program;

·         Be approximately 750-1100 word in length, though longer pieces can often be accommodated by splitting them into multiple articles;

·         Include a lede, a short single sentence summarizing the most important aspects of the story.

·         Include hyperlink citations, which will be vetted;

·         Address a current issue in international affairs;

·         Include a short biographical statement at the end (see recent pieces for examples); and

·         Make at least one policy recommendation for at least one policy actor.

Articles must be compliant with this style guide and sent to iarsubmissions@email.gwu.edu as Microsoft Word attachments. Published articles become the property of the International Affairs Review, which accepts no responsibility for lost or damaged materials.

Due to the number of submissions we receive, we are only able to respond to emails that include articles we are interested in publishing at the time. We only consider articles that are not being considered by other outlets for publication. If you do not hear back from us in three business days, you can assume we will not publish the submitted article and can pitch it to other outlets.

Print Edition

The International Affairs Review is currently accepting submissions for the Summer 2022 print edition through January 30, 2022.

Submissions must follow the guidelines below:

  • Article Topic: All current issues in international affairs are encouraged, though preference will be given to papers concerning timely global or regional issues with specific policy recommendations.

  • Exclusivity: Articles should not already be published elsewhere. If submitting to multiple publications, then please inform the IAR at the time of submission.

  • Format: Papers should be 2,500-5,000 words, double-spaced at 12 point font, and properly documented according to the Chicago Manual of Style guidelines and in a file format of doc. or docx.

  • Biography and Abstract: Submissions must be accompanied by a 100-word author bio and an abstract that is 250 words or less.

  • Blind Review: To ensure an unbiased selection process, the author's name and all identifying information will be removed before the editorial team selects an article for publication.

Submissions should be submitted using the Summer 2022 IAR Article Submission Form. Please feel free to reach out to iar@gwu.edu with any questions.
